Brief Description

The Brichard’s Slender Cichlid (Teleogramma brichardi) is a peaceful and unique cichlid species native to the rapid streams and rivers of Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of the Congo) in Africa. Known for their slender body and shy nature, these cichlids are well-suited for aquariums with strong water movement and excellent oxygenation. They thrive in well-oxygenated water with a stable current, making them an ideal species for aquarists interested in replicating riverine habitats. Despite their somewhat timid nature, they are peaceful towards other fish and their own species, making them suitable for community tanks with other calm species.

Food and Feeding

Brichard’s Slender Cichlids are carnivorous and thrive on a diet that mimics their natural food sources. They relish live or frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and small aquatic invertebrates. For variety, you can offer high-quality flake or pellet food, although live or frozen options are preferred to keep them in optimal health. Occasionally, they may prey on small fish if available, so be cautious when housing them with very small tank mates.

To maintain their health and coloration, feed them small portions twice a day, ensuring that any leftover food is removed to keep water quality high.

Origin

Native to the fast-flowing rivers and rapids of Zaire (Democratic Republic of the Congo) in Central Africa, Brichard’s Slender Cichlid is well adapted to environments with strong currents and well-oxygenated water. These conditions should be replicated in their aquarium habitat for them to thrive.

Sexing

Sexing Teleogramma brichardi is relatively straightforward, especially during breeding periods. Females develop a reddish belly when they are ready to spawn, while males remain a uniform grey color. Males may also grow slightly larger than females, making them easier to distinguish.

Breeding

Breeding Brichard’s Slender Cichlids can be achieved in the home aquarium if their environment mimics their natural habitat. These cichlids are cave spawners, meaning they will lay their eggs in the roof of a chosen cave. The pair bond is not strong, and they may change partners throughout their lives.

To encourage spawning, provide caves or hollow spaces using rocks or aquarium décor. The female will lay creamy white eggs on the roof of the cave, which should hatch in about 3-4 days. After hatching, the fry will become free-swimming within a few more days and can be fed on newly hatched brine shrimp or specialized fry food.

Once the eggs are laid, it is crucial to maintain excellent water conditions to ensure a high survival rate for the fry. Monitoring the water parameters and keeping the tank clean will increase the likelihood of successful breeding.

Lifespan

The Brichard’s Slender Cichlid has an expected lifespan of 5-8 years when provided with proper care, including a well-maintained environment, stable water parameters, and a balanced diet.

Tank Setup and Care

As a species originating from river rapids, Brichard’s Slender Cichlids require an aquarium setup that mimics their natural habitat. This means providing well-oxygenated water with plenty of current, which can be achieved through the use of strong water pumps or external filters. A tank of at least 100 liters (26 gallons) is recommended, with more space provided for additional fish or larger setups.

Use smooth river rocks, driftwood, and other aquarium décor to create hiding places, as these cichlids appreciate shelter and will use these areas to retreat when feeling threatened. Adding caves or crevices will also encourage natural behavior and provide suitable areas for breeding.

Maintain the water temperature between 20-23°C (68-73.4°F), with a pH range of 6-7. The water hardness should be between 7-11°dGH. Ensure regular water changes and use a powerful filtration system to keep the water clean and well-oxygenated.

Temperament and Tank Mates

Brichard’s Slender Cichlids are peaceful fish and get along well with other species of a similar temperament. They are not aggressive toward their own species, although they may be shy and prefer to stay out of sight when not breeding. Due to their calm nature, they are ideal for community tanks with other peaceful fish.

However, ensure that the tank mates are not overly aggressive or large enough to bully the slender cichlid, as this can cause stress and lead to health problems. Suitable tank mates include other riverine species, tetras, or peaceful bottom-dwelling fish.

Short Description

Brichard’s Slender Cichlids (Teleogramma brichardi) are fascinating fish that are well-suited for aquarists looking to recreate fast-flowing river environments. With their peaceful nature, interesting breeding habits, and preference for well-oxygenated water, they are a joy to keep in a community tank with the right setup. These cichlids are known for their sleek, streamlined bodies, which allow them to thrive in their natural habitats of river rapids. While shy, they are peaceful and will make a great addition to any calm and well-maintained aquarium.
