Food and Feeding
The Wormline Peckoltia (Peckoltia braueri) is an omnivorous bottom-dweller that readily accepts a variety of foods. A high-quality flake or pellet diet should be the staple, supplemented with protein-rich treats such as live or frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, and insect larvae. Providing a well-balanced diet will ensure their health and prevent them from nibbling on aquatic plants.
Origin
The Wormline Peckoltia originates from South America, specifically Brazil and Guyana. These fish are typically found in soft, slow-moving waters with plenty of driftwood and rocky hiding spots, mimicking their natural habitat.
Sexing
Distinguishing between males and females is relatively easy in mature specimens. Males develop tooth-shaped spines along their upper flanks and on the edges of their leading pectoral fins. Females tend to be slightly more rounded in the belly region, especially when carrying eggs.
Breeding
The Wormline Peckoltia is a cave-spawning species, with the male taking full responsibility for guarding the nest. To encourage successful breeding:
- Provide caves or hollow logs where the fish can spawn.
- The male guards the eggs and the fry once they hatch, often driving the female away.
- Once the fry become free-swimming, feed them Infusoria initially, then gradually introduce newly hatched brine shrimp as they grow.
Lifespan
With proper care, the Wormline Peckoltia (Peckoltia braueri) can live between 8 to 12 years, making them a long-term commitment for aquarists.
Short Description
The Wormline Peckoltia is a peaceful but territorial bottom-dweller that prefers a well-structured aquarium with plenty of hiding places. While generally shy, these fish become more active during feeding times and at night. To replicate their natural environment:
- Add rocks, driftwood, and caves to create secure hiding spots.
- Maintain soft to moderately hard water conditions with a pH between 6.4 and 7.5.
- Keep them in dimly lit aquariums with floating plants to diffuse light and reduce stress.
Though they are peaceful with other fish, mature males can become territorial toward their own species, especially in smaller tanks. They are best suited for community aquariums with similarly sized, non-aggressive fish.
