Food and feeding

The Golden barb will accept all foods offered. Feed them with a quality flake or use small pellets and add some broad leaved plants to the aquarium to supplement their diet.

Origin

Asia; Golden barbs are found in the waterways of India, Pakistan and Bangladesh.

Sexing

Males will have a more pronounced vertical stripe on their bodies.

Breeding

A small breeding tank is all that is required for breeding Golden barbs. They will scatter their eggs around the substrate but the parents need to be removed after spawning to prevent them from eating the eggs. When the fry are free swimming, they can be fed on Infusoria.

Lifespan

The expected life span of Puntius gelius is 2-3 years.

Short description

It is best to keep Puntius gelius in small groups of at least 5 fish. They are a peaceful species and can be kept in a community tank.
