Common Name

Ozelot Sword

Origin

Echinodorus “Ozelot” is a cultivated hybrid developed by crossing Echinodorus schlueteri and Echinodorus barthii. It does not occur in the wild and was bred specifically for aquarium use.

Propagation

This cultivar reproduces via runners (also known as stolons). These runners grow from the base of the mother plant and form small plantlets at intervals. Once the plantlets develop their own roots and a few leaves, they can be gently separated and replanted into the substrate. In mature plants, division of the rhizome is also possible, especially in emersed setups.

Difficulty

Easy

Short Description

Echinodorus “Ozelot” is a robust and decorative sword plant ideal for midground to background placement in medium to large aquariums. Its leaves are reddish-brown with distinct dark spots, especially visible on new growth. Unlike many other Echinodorus species, its leaf coloration remains stable even under moderate lighting. It thrives in nutrient-rich substrate, benefits from iron supplementation, and adapts well to a wide range of water conditions. This makes it a great choice for both beginner and experienced aquarists.

FAQs

  • Why are the spots on my Ozelot Sword fading?

Unlike some other Echinodorus species, the spots on Ozelot Sword leaves usually remain visible even in moderate light. However, if the plant is not getting enough iron or the lighting is too weak, the contrast may fade. Try increasing light intensity or adding an iron-rich fertilizer.

  • Can Echinodorus “Ozelot” grow without CO2?

Yes, it can grow well in low-tech tanks without CO2. However, CO2 injection will boost growth rate and leaf size, making the plant more vibrant overall.

  • How fast does Echinodorus “Ozelot” grow?

This cultivar grows relatively fast under good lighting and with a nutrient-rich substrate. In tanks with medium lighting and no CO2, the growth is still steady but slower.

  • Can I grow Echinodorus “Ozelot” emersed?

Yes, it can be grown emersed in humid conditions such as paludariums or shallow tanks. In emersed form, it may produce flowers and can be propagated via division of the rhizome or by runners.

  • Is it safe to plant Ozelot Sword near other species?

Yes, but leave enough space. It grows large leaves that can overshadow smaller plants nearby. Best placed as a focal point or specimen plant in the midground or background.
