Males display a brighter colouration and have extended dorsal and anal fins.
Chukai bettas are bubble nest builders but unlike most of the other Betta species, the male will show no aggression to the female when guarding the nest. Keep one pair of fish in the tank as other fish will distract them, add floating plants or a piece of polystyrene to aid the fish create the bubble nest. The spawning will take 2-3 hours and about 40-50 eggs will be laid. These should hatch after 2 days and a few days later the fry will be free swimming.
The expected life span for Betta tussyae is 3-5 years.
Add wood or similar to create hiding places and add some floating plants to create shady areas. The water flow should be low and keep the water quality high with regular water changes.
