Food and feeding
Mystus wolffii is a carnivorous bottom-dweller that primarily feeds on insects, crustaceans, and small aquatic organisms in the wild. In the aquarium, they readily accept live and frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and chopped earthworms. They can also be conditioned to eat high-quality sinking pellets designed for carnivorous catfish. Feeding should take place in the evening or after lights are dimmed, as this species is more active during twilight hours.
Origin
This species is native to Southeast Asia, ranging from Thailand to Indonesia. It inhabits slow-moving rivers, streams, and floodplains with soft substrates and dense vegetation or submerged roots.
Sexing
Males can be identified by the presence of a small, elongated genital papilla located in front of the anal fin. Females are generally more robust in body shape, especially when carrying eggs.
Breeding
There are currently no confirmed reports of Mystus wolffii breeding in captivity. In the wild, they are believed to be seasonal spawners that reproduce during the rainy season, likely scattering eggs among submerged roots or vegetation. Breeding in an aquarium would require simulation of environmental triggers, such as seasonal temperature and water chemistry changes, but success remains undocumented.
Lifespan
With proper care, Mystus wolffii can live up to 30 years, making it one of the longest-living freshwater catfish species commonly kept in aquariums.
Short description
Mystus wolffii is a peaceful, nocturnal catfish species that prefers the lower regions of the aquarium. Growing up to 22 cm (8.7 inches), it requires a spacious tank with a soft sandy substrate and plenty of hiding places such as driftwood, caves, and dense planting. This shoaling species is best kept in small groups of 4–6 to reduce stress and encourage natural behavior. They are ideal for larger, peaceful community aquariums.
Suitable tankmates
Given its calm temperament, Mystus wolffii can coexist with a variety of peaceful, similarly sized species. Avoid small fish that could be mistaken for food. Recommended tankmates include:
- Tinfoil barbs
- Bala sharks
- Clown loaches
- Large rainbowfish
- Severum cichlids
- Other large, peaceful bottom-dwelling species
Recommended plants
Although Mystus wolffii is not known to uproot plants, it prefers dimly lit aquariums with shaded areas. Use hardy or low-light plant species and floaters to create a natural, river-like environment. Suitable plants include:
- Java fern
- Anubias barteri
- Cryptocoryne wendtii
- Java moss
- Floating plants> such as Pistia, Salvinia or Amazon frogbit
